Myth:
Alcohol will not make me gain weight.
Truth:
Alcohol provides energy by supplying a source of calories to the body, which can inadvertently cause weight gain.A standard portion size is one of the following:
  • 12 oz. regular beer = 150 calories
  • 12 oz. light beer = 110 calories
  • 5 oz. glass of wine = 90 calories
  • 1.5 oz. of distilled spirits = 90 calories—
    with soda = 170 calories.
Myth:
There are no benefits todrinking alcohol.
Truth:
Used in moderation (1 drink per day for women, 2 drinks per day for men), it has been suggested that alcohol can have some health benefits such as being protective against heart disease. However, excess use of alcohol can have negative health effects.
Myth:
Eating a big meal or drinking milk before drinking alcohol will keep you sober.
Truth:
Eating foods rich in carbohydrates and proteins before consuming alcohol will slow the absorption rate of alcohol into the bloodstream. However, this does not prevent the effects of alcohol or intoxication.
Myth:
Coffee will help cure a hangover.
Truth:
A hangover is partly caused by dehydration. Coffee will only make a hangover worse. Drinking a few glasses of water may relieve some symptoms of a hangover.
