HALL HISTORY:
West Hall was named after Bessie Brooks West. Bessie operated one of the dining centers in 1946 for
the Department of Institutional Management out of the extra barracks donated by the army near
Moro Street. This dining center was nicknamed “Bessie’s Beanery.” In 1960 plans were developed
for the Derby Complex to house 1200 women in four halls. West was built in 1962 and opened
that fall. It was named in honor of Bessie B. West and was formally dedicated on Saturday,
October 27, 1962. The hall provided more refinements than any of the halls constructed up
to this time. They had acoustical tile, full length mirrors, and wardrobes with built-in
chest of drawers. The cost to build West Hall was 1.3 billion dollars. West Hall housed only
females until the fall of 2007, when men were assigned to two wings of the building.
